Researchers at Fraunhofer IAF have developed a laser-enhanced quantum sensor that combines high magnetic-field sensitivity with a large dynamic range. Using laser threshold magnetometry, they improved the ratio of sensitivity and dynamic range by a factor of up to 590 compared with state-of-the-art approaches. The breakthrough is enabled by the first demonstration of 100% optical contrast, combined with strong laser readout signals.

The results, published in Nature Communications, open up new prospects for medical diagnostics, navigation, and resource exploration.

Are you using AI to study? Here's how to do it well

Artificial intelligence (AI) means high school and college students now have access to a resource that can potentially "do all the work for them." While this can reduce students' immediate stress about submitting assignments, it may negatively impact their long-term learning.

Birds are more afraid of women than men. Scientists have no idea why

Scientists have uncovered a strange pattern in urban bird behavior: Across five European countries and 37 species, birds consistently fled sooner when approached by women than men. Researchers have no clear explanation for the difference, raising intriguing questions about how bi

Astronauts’ hearts just passed a surprising test for Mars

A new study tracking 13 astronauts suggests that the human heart may be surprisingly well equipped for a journey to Mars, especially with regular exercise during spaceflight. Researchers found that astronauts' hearts adapted to months of weightlessness and handled simulated Marti
